On this winter day, we are embarking not only on a yacht journey but also on a quest to discover a sense of inner freedom. From the engine room to the captain’s bridge, from the sunlit shores of Liguria to the snow-covered peaks of the Alps. What propels yachts forward, and what drives our hearts?

Captain Ilia Koshelev, at the helm of a 30-meter yacht, reveals what matters most.

Ilia Koshelev: Guests step aboard the yacht, and their mood instantly changes. The most important thing is that they come in and smile.

“This yacht has very proper and classic lines. It was specifically designed so that when moving against the waves, the vessel receives the correct structural loads.”

THE DOC: What made you decide to become a captain?
Ilia Koshelev: I’ve always loved ships, boats, and the sea. I did sailing for more than 20 years; we raced on a large sports boat (He has participated in major international regattas, including the World Championship dedicated to the launch of the Euro currency on a Grand Mistral yacht, the Swan 42 World Championship, and several top European races such as the Malta Middle Sea Race, the Giraglia, and Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez on a Shipman 63). It’s a demanding and fascinating job — both in terms of communication with people and in terms of self-discipline.

THE DOC: A stereotype about sailors?
Ilia Koshelev: There’s a belief that people go to sea because they couldn’t find their place on land, but I wouldn’t say so. You need to adapt your life to what you do on a boat. It’s different from life on shore, but it’s a life — and a very interesting one. You must always feel like a part of the crew and make sure your mood does not contradict the goals everyone is moving toward together.

THE DOC: Does the captain have any hobbies?
Ilia Koshelev: High, rocky mountains are the alternative to the sea. When you’re skiing, you are one-on-one with nature.

“Let’s go to the heart of the ship — the engine room. The most important things here are the main engines.”
But here, he says the most important words:

People are more important than things.

THE DOC: What would you wish for your daughter?
(Ilia has a wonderful daughter — at the time of publishing she has already turned 18.)
Ilia Koshelev: Above all, I wish my daughter inner freedom — that she feels the world the same way a captain feels standing on deck in the open sea. This feeling that you can move in any direction you choose.

THE DOC: Your motto?
Ilia Koshelev: Always forward.

THE DOC: What do you love most about your job?
Ilia Koshelev: You always face new conditions where, even in familiar situations, you must find a new solution. No two situations are ever completely identical, and discovering these nuances is an entire separate life. Perhaps that is why so many people choose to live on boats.

In questo giorno d’inverno, partiamo non solo per un viaggio in yacht, ma anche per una ricerca interiore — alla scoperta della libertà dentro di noi. Dalla sala macchine al ponte di comando, dalle coste soleggiate della Liguria alle cime innevate delle Alpi. Cosa spinge avanti gli yacht — e cosa spinge avanti i nostri cuori?

Il capitano Ilia Koshelev, al timone di uno yacht di 30 metri, ci rivela ciò che conta davvero.
Gli ospiti salgono a bordo, e il loro umore cambia subito. La cosa più importante è che entrino e sorridano.

È un lavoro impegnativo e affascinante — sia dal punto di vista del rapporto con le persone, sia per la disciplina personale.

THE DOC: Uno stereotipo sui marinai?
Ilia Koshelev: Si dice che chi va per mare non abbia trovato il proprio posto sulla terraferma, ma non lo condivido. Devi adattare la tua vita a ciò che fai su una barca. È diversa dalla vita a terra, ma è una vita — e molto interessante. Devi sentirti sempre parte dell’equipaggio e fare in modo che il tuo stato d’animo non vada contro gli obiettivi comuni.

THE DOC: Il comandante ha qualche hobby?
Ilia Koshelev: Le montagne alte e rocciose sono l’alternativa al mare. Quando scii, sei da solo faccia a faccia con la natura.

Ilia Koshelev: Le augurerei, prima di tutto, la libertà interiore. Che percepisca il mondo come lo percepisce un capitano sulla coperta, in mare aperto. Quella sensazione di poter andare in qualsiasi direzione tu scelga.

Ilia Koshelev: Sempre avanti.

THE DOC: Почему Вы решили стать капитаном?
Илья Кошелев: Мне всегда нравились корабли, лодки и море. Я занимался парусным спортом больше 20 лет; мы гонялись на большой спортивной лодке (Илья участвовал в крупных международных регатах, включая чемпионат мира, посвящённый введению валюты евро, на яхте класса Grand Mistral, чемпионат мира в классе Swan 42, а также в известных европейских гонках, таких как Malta Middle Sea Race, Giraglia и Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez на яхте Shipman 63). Илья Кошелев: Прежде всего я хотел бы пожелать своей дочери внутренней свободы — чтобы она чувствовала мир так же, как капитан чувствует себя на палубе в открытом море. Это ощущение, что ты можешь двигаться в любом направлении, которое выберешь.

Илья Кошелев: Только вперёд.

THE DOC: Что Вы больше всего любите в своей работе?
Илья Кошелев: Постоянно появляются новые условия, в которых даже в знакомой ситуации нужно найти новое решение. Никогда не бывает полностью одинаковых обстоятельств, и поиск этих нюансов — целая отдельная жизнь. Наверное, поэтому многие люди живут на лодках.

What is EES?

The Entry/Exit System (EES) will come into effect on 12 October 2025. European countries using EES will gradually introduce it at their external borders, and it will be fully operational by 10 April 2026.

Who must register in the EES?

EES applies to third-country nationals (non-EU, non-Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland citizens) who travel for short stays (up to 90 days in any 180-day period) in Schengen countries.

This includes travelers who:

  • Need a short-stay visa, OR
  • Do not need a visa but still enter for a short stay.

Where does EES apply?

It applies at the external borders of:
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus*, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland. (*In Cyprus and Ireland, passports will still be stamped manually.)

The THE DOC team once again visited the Monaco Yacht Show, which this year took place from September 24 to 27. Welcome to the most prestigious — and the most expensive — event in the yachting industry! We strolled along the port, enjoying the atmosphere. Of course, it’s impossible to capture everything in one story — you really have to see it for yourself — but here’s how we experienced those days.

 

The Price of Prestige
Ticket prices reflected the exclusivity of the event: €725 for one day, €1,230 for two, and €1,950 for three.
Omar Cane, CEO of THE DOC Yacht Services and a maritime agent, visited several yachts and stands. This year’s show was filled with business meetings and professional encounters.

Numarine: From Turkey with Love

Its name pays homage to the legendary Serenissima — the Republic of Venice, a thousand-year maritime power, whose spirit of strength and grace is reflected in the yacht’s design.

The moment you step aboard, you feel the energy: confidence, determination, life. On the bow, a boxing ring immediately catches your eye.
“This ring also serves as a negotiation table — here, you can settle matters like a gentleman, quickly and decisively,” smiles the captain. It’s easy to believe that deals are closed faster here than anywhere else.

Inside the Gentlemen’s Club lounge, there’s a fold-out balcony and a glass-enclosed wine cellar. Translucent obsidian softly illuminates the collection of wines, rare spirits, and cigars — all displayed without ostentation. And, of course, no gentleman would make his lady wait. An Expedition Yacht Sea Trial with Captain of M/y GENESIA Maria Rametto

 

Mildly and without a single jolt, the 40-meter yacht Genesia sets sail. The bright orange lettering and the orange-painted captain’s bridge stand out amidst the calm of the Mediterranean Sea. Isn’t it an art? We depart from Porto Maurizio in Imperia into the sea to conduct sea trials. They graciously allowed us a few hours to observe how the crew works together, how the vessel is managed, and why women have a unique place in the nautical world.

Even more remarkable is that this motor yacht is commanded by an Italian woman, Captain Maria Rametto. We asked her a few questions. Enjoy your reading!

THE DOC: The captain or the female captain? (Note: In Italian, there are two forms of address: the gender-neutral “comandante” and the feminine “comandantessa.” In English, the term “captain” is considered gender-neutral.)

Maria Rametto: Well, “captain” is perfectly fine. I don’t think there’s a gender issue in this position on board — so “captain,” “female captain,” or just “Maria” it’s even better.

THE DOC: Maria, what inspired you to become a captain?
Maria Rametto: A very dear friend inspired me. I started my journey when I was 18 years old to obtain my boating license. He was a long-haul captain, and I have always had a passion for the sea, so I sought to follow in his footsteps.

THE DOC: Is responsibility difficult?
Maria Rametto: Responsibility is exhausting; it’s not difficult, but it drains your soul. However, you get used to it and learn to manage it.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
Maria Rametto: What I enjoy most in my job is discovering the sea, exploring new places, and interacting with people.

THE DOC: What is your most beautiful memory on the job?

Maria Rametto: My most beautiful memory is when guests compliment me on the crew.

THE DOC: Maria, how do you maintain a positive atmosphere on board?
Maria Rametto: I don’t maintain a positive atmosphere by myself; we all keep it together by finding energy in the group rather than the individual. I believe this is key for all small communities.

THE DOC: Could you give some advice for women both in the nautical world and in all fields?
Maria Rametto: The advice I give is that we are definitely strong in all fields and areas; we just need to push ourselves a little more and realize that every time we make a mistake, it means we are learning. If we make mistakes, it’s great because we learn so much. That’s it. Otherwise, we are strong. We are tremendously strong!

THE DOC: Wow! Thank you! How do you see the nautical world in the future?
Maria Rametto: I hope there will be more women in this field because we need diversity. I hope for more sailing boats compared to motorboats in the future and a bit more technology that helps the environment.

THE DOC: What phrase inspires you?
Maria Rametto: “Lascia andare…” (Note: In Italian, this means not to force things, to let them flow naturally, being aware that persistently fighting for something from which we are certain we will not gain benefits can prevent us from discovering new horizons, new things, or people that could make us happy. In English, this can be translated as “let it go” or “let it be.”)

Non è un’arte? Partiamo da Porto Maurizio in Imperia verso il mare per condurre i collaudi in mare. Ci hanno gentilmente permesso di osservare per alcune ore come lavora l’equipaggio, come viene gestita l’imbarcazione e perché le donne hanno un posto unico nel mondo nautico.
Ancora più notevole è che questo yacht a motore è comandato da una donna italiana, il Comandante Maria Rametto. Le abbiamo posto alcune domande. Buona lettura!

THE DOC: Il comandante o la comandantessa?
Maria Rametto: Allora, va benissimo il comandante. Non credo ci sia su una posizione di bordo una questione di genere – quindi va benissimo comandante, comandantessa, Maria – ancora meglio.

THE DOC: Maria, cosa ti ha ispirato a diventare un comandante?
Maria Rametto: Un caro amico mi ha ispirato. Ho iniziato il mio percorso quando avevo 18 anni a prendere la patente nautica. Era un comandante di lungo corso, e ho sempre avuto una passione per il mare, quindi ho cercato di seguire le sue orme.

THE DOC: La responsabilità è difficile?
Maria Rametto: La responsabilità è un massacro; non è difficile, ma ti massacra l’anima. Tuttavia, ci si abitua e si impara a gestirla.

THE DOC: Cosa ti piace di più del tuo lavoro?
Maria Rametto: Ciò che mi piace di più nel mio lavoro è scoprire il mare, esplorare posti nuovi e interagire con le persone.

Se sbagliamo, è bello perché impariamo tanto. Tutto qui. Per il resto, siamo forti. Siamo tremendamente forti!

Wow! Grazie! Come vedi il mondo nautico in futuro?
Maria Rametto: Spero ci siano più donne in questo lavoro perché abbiamo bisogno di diversità. Spero ci siano più barche a vela rispetto alle barche a motore in futuro e un po’ più di tecnologia che aiuti l’ambiente.

Maria Rametto: “Lascia andare…”

New Requirements to Enter Europe: EES Starts November 10, 2024

 

The European Commission has officially confirmed the launch date of the new Entry/Exit System (EES) in the European Union. In a speech at eu-LISA, EU Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson announced that the EES will become operational on November 10, 2024.

While this date had been mentioned by various media outlets, this marks the first official confirmation by the EU. Commissioner Johansson highlighted that all necessary legal procedures have been completed, and the system is currently in its final testing phase.

The EES is expected to impact around 700 million travelers to Europe annually. The system will replace manual passport stamping with automated registration of entry and exit data, including biometric information. The primary goals of the EES are to modernize border management, prevent illegal migration, and enhance the security of European citizens.
